A Pair of Docks Book Review

APairofDocksI became aware of this teen novel through Mother-Daughter Book reviews, who organized a book Blitz for Jennifer Ellis and her new book, a Pair of Docks. As a lover of fantasy and magical world, I was certainly intrigued by the idea and looking forward to delve into the novel!

A Pair of Docks tells the story of the Sinclair siblings, Simon, Abbey and Caleb. The happen to stumble upon a portal to different worlds, which soon enough they find out are a depiction of their very own futures. But they each have a different one — a different world with a different future. They also learn that all those futures are threatened to become undone.

The book is mainly told from the point of view of Abbey, a 14 year-old genius girl who is highly skeptical and very science oriented. As a matter of fact, she’s always thinking in math-science and logical terms. This at times makes both the read and the character a little cold and unapproachable, but the further I read into the story, I finally warmed up to her. Caleb is her twin brother, and Abbey’s absolute opposite — he’s hot-headed, acts on impulse, has great charisma and a very resourceful imagination. Simon is their older brother, very shy and a computer uber-geek. Throughout the story, Abbey’s understanding of the world that surrounds her is turned upside-down, and makes her reconsider everything that she knows and believes in.

A Pair of Docks is well written, full of adventure and very enjoyable for all sci-fi/fantasy lovers. It is sometimes a little too science-heavy and confusing, but the story carries through and makes for an enjoyable read. It might be a bit scary for tweens, but I’m sure most teenagers (if they can read The Hunger Games…) would feel perfectly fine with the subject matters and language of this book. Looking forward to the next books of the series!

NOTE: I received a copy of this novel from the author in exchange for my honest review.
