My Review

I’m a big fan of the fantasy and faerie world, as well as a huge fan of picture books. I loved the idea of Ninja and Bunny’s Great Adventure and found it especially great to have the eclectic mix of Ninjas, fairy bunnies and other fantasy creatures within the world. The book has a wide array of colorful illustrations that allow us to glimpse into this world that modern day kids live in, at least in the beginning: imaginary worlds peppered by fairies, princesses hand in hand with Minecraft and Legos. The pretend play between the sisters reminded me a little of the wonderful world of Hayao Miyazaki’s Tottoro, or the fantastic world behind the wardrobe of Narnia. However, I found this particular picture book to be a little hard to grasp, as the story is told a little bit like a telegram — it is missing a lot of detail, like establishing the quest more clearly from the get-go, or the different steps that the hero sisters take in order to vanquish the threat to Princess Isla. For my taste, it has way too little written story to be a tween book, but its not written simply enough  to be a picture book to read to the younger crowd. It takes half the book to get into the world of the fairies, and the whole conflict resolution is pretty abrupt in my view.

That said, my 7 year-old daughter read the book too, and she liked it. She particularly liked the fact that the conflict is resolved in the end in a funny way that she hadn’t foreseenf before. She was completely taken by Bunny, but she said she would have preferred Ninja to turn into a Mermaid instead.

In conclusion, I think it is a great kernel for a story, but I believe it needs to be developed more fully to be able to reach its full potential.

NOTE: I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from its author in exchange for my honest review.

About the Author

Kara S Tyler is the real world name of author Pavarti K Tyler. As Pav, her books have spanned genres and won many aKara headshot Ninja Bunnywards, however, they are geared toward an adult audience. Now that she’s writing children’s books, Kara has decided to use her real name.

The Adventures of Ninja and Bunny first came about because of a fabulous conversation overheard between Kara’s two children during a very long car ride. The two young girls spent over two hours debating various aspects of Fae politics and social structure. Without realizing it, the girls were building a world so real, Ray Bradbury would be proud.

Kara lives in Baltimore with her husband, two children and two terrible dogs. She is a full-time author and mother.
