Photo Stories

Finally taking the Camera

Last Tuesday, the kids finally got to hold the camera! Once they were done with their Storyboards, I wanted them to take pictures with toys and make their photo stories based on the drawings they had made. It was the best way to let them see physically what they were seeing in their mind’s eye.

Right from the get-go they became aware of the constrains of the assignment… they wanted to shoot other angles, shot sizes and more pictures, but I asked them to keep focused on only doing what was planned on paper. Following is what they did. My recap of the experience is at the very bottom of all these Photo stories, so please scroll down to the end!

The kids had a lot of fun and were very involved with the project. I was jumping from one photo shoot to the next, giving them a little hand here and there, but they mainly shot all these pictures you’re seeing on their own (except from Miss I, who got to use my professional camera — so she set the frame and all, but I was the one focusing and pulling the trigger).

Next class we’ll record their dialogue and set their voices to these pictures, in a sort of still photography moving storyboard — that way they can actually see how their stories are flowing… and most importantly, what they are missing. I believe that the best way to realize your mistakes while making movies is by SEEING them. If you are reading this post, it would be very useful to the kids to get input from outside on what you thought their stories were about. If you could leave a quick comment under with a brief summary of what you got out of each story (or at least your favorite one), I will read that to them for next class. As we are about to go on Spring Break, we’ll have our next class tomorrow, so there’s not much time! Once we come back from the break, we’ll start the final planning phase to shoot the real movies.

  1. It’s so hard to choose which one is my favorite! I like “Bad Guys” because it’s a bit of a cliffhanger! “What going to happen next?!”

This is such a fantastic class! I’ll bet they have an amazing time.

    • Thanks for your comment. I’ll let Mr. J.H. what you said. We’ll be doing an easier take on the stories tomorrow, putting their voices to the photographs. It should be fun! I hope to post as soon as I have the entire edit done! Thanks for stopping by and for the comments, as always 🙂
