Gingerbread-house-Party-1Yesterday, we had our yearly Gingerbread House making party at our place. Both Little Miss I and I had been looking forward to this all week, and I had been getting ready for quite some time. This year I decided to buy the Wilton’s kits for the Halloween houses, as they were discounted right after the holiday… however, I didn’t think the whole thing through, and we ended up with a ton of orange icing!! In any case, I did the Cheesy Olaf, a spice bread Christmas tree, and we got our favorite candy to decorate the houses with.

Gingerbread-house-party-2I did what I wanted to do last year (but never got around to it), and wrapped all the kits with the kids names, then placed the gifts under the tree for the kids to find. Once everyone got to our home, they opened the presents and got straight to work!

Gingerbread-house-party-3I tried to get Tiny A to do the houses with us, but all the candy and chocolate laying about was driving him crazy… so, while we all made the houses, Daddy took him outside with his other two baby friends. Here’s the baby contingent of the party.

Gingerbread-house-party-3Once the older kids were done, we put all the houses together, to make a little Gingerbread House village.

Gingerbread-house-party-4I also wanted to have all the kids pose next to their houses, so here are the little artists of each finished house.

Gingerbread-house-party-5Once more, I had a lot of fun — and I think the kids did too. Afterwards, while cleaning up all the mess, my husband said I had to try and make next year’s party smaller… but I really don’t think that’s possible! As the kids get older, they make more friends, and our circle of important people grows. I really don’t mind the cleaning up and all the craziness, and I’m sure I’ll figure out a way to keep this party going and growing. As time passes, I also get better at organizing myself… and I also now know when to ask for help. In any case, I did manage to take all these pictures, visit with everyone, and I think we all had a good time.

Once the kids were down for the night, after taking the last bag of trash outside, I walked back into my home. The warmth, the smells of baked goods and pine, chocolates and Christmas, suddenly made me realize I’ve been living here (in this house) for almost 10 years. In all my life, I had never before lived in the same place for more than 4 years… not even as a child. I realized I’m now creating memories for my children. All these traditions and rituals that come year after year, and that will stay with them (hopefully) for their entire life. I think our 2014 Gingerbread House party was a great success!

  1. What a great idea to have a yearly Gingerbread Bread Party & it looks so much fun. Hope you enjoyed your Sweet & Spicy Christmas Tree Bread, it looks fab. Thanks for linking my recipe πŸ™‚

    • Thank YOU for the recipe, Sarah! It was a very beautiful treat! I think I went a little heavy on the spices, so the kids were not too drawn to it, but it was yummy! And the raspberries instead of the maraschino cherries worked great too πŸ™‚

  2. Dear Erika.
    Congratulations!!!
The most beautiful gingerbread houses ever!!!!
You put a lot of imagination on them.
    Big hug!

  3. What a fabulous idea! Not only for a party theme but also as an activity to keep them busy. I’m glad you’re building memories. My mom also went to a lot of effort with our parties. I remember one year she dressed up as a gypsy and read our fortunes in the caravan on a ball!
